Work History
You need to have a sufficient work history to qualify for SSD benefits, which is measured in work credits:
- Earning Work Credits: You earn work credits by working and paying Social Security taxes. In 2024, you earn one credit for each $1,640 of earnings, up to a maximum of four credits per year.
- Required Credits: The number of work credits you need to qualify for SSD depends on your age at the time you became disabled. Generally, you need 40 credits, 20 of which were earned in the last 10 years ending with the year you became disabled. Younger workers may qualify with fewer credits.
