What is Social Security Disability?

Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits provide essential financial support to individuals who are unable to work due to a disabling condition. At Stern & Cohen, we understand the complexities of the SSD process and are dedicated to helping our clients in Philadelphia and throughout Pennsylvania navigate these challenges.

Who Qualifies for Social Security Disability?

To qualify for SSD benefits, you must meet certain criteria set by the Social Security Administration (SSA):

Disability Status

Your condition must meet the SSA’s strict definition of disability. This means:
  • Severe Impairment: Your condition must significantly limit your ability to perform basic work activities, such as lifting, standing, walking, sitting, and remembering.
  • Duration: The impairment must be expected to last at least one year or result in death.
  • Listed Conditions: The SSA maintains a list of medical conditions that are considered severe enough to qualify for disability benefits. Even if your condition is not on the list, you may still qualify if you can demonstrate that it is as severe as a listed condition.

Work History

You need to have a sufficient work history to qualify for SSD benefits, which is measured in work credits:
  • Earning Work Credits: You earn work credits by working and paying Social Security taxes. In 2024, you earn one credit for each $1,640 of earnings, up to a maximum of four credits per year.
  • Required Credits: The number of work credits you need to qualify for SSD depends on your age at the time you became disabled. Generally, you need 40 credits, 20 of which were earned in the last 10 years ending with the year you became disabled. Younger workers may qualify with fewer credits.

The Application Process

At Stern & Cohen, we offer comprehensive services to assist you through every step of the SSD application process:
  • Initial Consult: We offer a free initial consultation to evaluate your case. During this meeting, we will discuss your medical condition, work history, and the likelihood of qualifying for SSD benefits.
  • Application Assistance: We ensure your SSD application is accurately completed and thoroughly documented, helping you include all necessary medical and work history information for a strong claim.
  • Appeals Process: If your SSD application is denied, we guide you through the appeals process, providing support at every stage to improve your chances of approval.
  • Medical Evidence Collection: We collaborate with healthcare providers and medical experts to gather strong evidence and detailed reports that clearly support your disability claim.
